Which is better for undergraduate engineering: UC San Diego or Ohio State?

The biggest practical tradeoff is UC San Diego’s research-intensive, Southern California engineering environment versus Ohio State’s broader Big Ten campus experience and particularly strong access to internships and co-ops in the growing Columbus industrial and technology corridor.

UC San Diego’s Jacobs School of Engineering is especially well known for computer science, bioengineering, electrical and computer engineering, robotics, and engineering tied to research labs and the nearby biotech ecosystem. Its quarter system moves quickly, and the campus culture is academically focused, with many students pursuing undergraduate research. La Jolla also offers strong connections to San Diego’s technology, defense, wireless communications, and life-sciences sectors, though the campus can feel less traditionally social or centralized than a classic college town.

Ohio State’s College of Engineering offers substantial depth across major fields, including mechanical, electrical, chemical, civil, computer science, materials, and aerospace-related work. Columbus provides a large urban-campus setting, a more visible school-spirit and residential-college atmosphere, and useful proximity to employers in manufacturing, automotive and mobility, semiconductors, logistics, and technology. Ohio State can be especially appealing for a student who values a large alumni network, structured recruiting, and a conventional semester pace.

For a student aiming at CS, bioengineering, electrical engineering, or research-intensive work, UC San Diego has the sharper overall edge. For someone who wants broad engineering options, a more traditional campus experience, and strong Midwest industry access, Ohio State is an excellent alternative. Assuming costs are reasonably similar, I would choose UC San Diego for its engineering reputation and specialized research ecosystem; a major price difference, however, should carry real weight in the decision.
