Is Rice or Williams generally considered more selective for college admission?

I’m a high school senior comparing Rice University and Williams College. I know both are extremely competitive, but I’m trying to understand whether one is generally considered more selective overall.

The biggest practical difference is not a clear gap in selectivity, but the applicant pool each school attracts: Rice draws many students seeking a research university with strong engineering, science, and preprofessional options, while Williams draws students specifically looking for a small, residential liberal-arts college. Both receive applications from exceptionally strong students and use highly selective, holistic review processes.

Neither school is a realistic “safer” alternative to the other.

Rice’s review may place particular weight on academic preparation for the intended area of study, intellectual engagement, and fit with its collaborative campus culture. Williams similarly looks for outstanding academic preparation, but its application is especially well served by evidence that the student will thrive in close discussion-based classes, a small community, and broad liberal-arts exploration.

Your choice should rest far more on whether you want Rice’s university setting and academic breadth or Williams’s intimate liberal-arts environment than on any perceived difference in admission difficulty.
