Rice is near the Museum District, the Texas Medical Center, and Hermann Park, but Houston’s scale and car-oriented layout mean city exploration takes more planning.

At Barnard, an active urban life can be part of an ordinary week: restaurants, internships, performances, museums, neighborhoods, and friends across the city are accessible without leaving the rhythm of student life for long. As a New Yorker, you would need to be intentional about not treating campus as merely a stop in your existing city routine; joining Barnard and Columbia communities matters because many students build their closest social circles through those spaces. Rice’s residential college system is likely to feel more cohesive and campus-centered.
