Is Cornell or Columbia better for a career in hotel management?

The central tradeoff is specialized, industry-built training at Cornell versus Columbia’s New York City setting and broader academic flexibility. Cornell’s Peter and Stephanie Nolan School of Hotel Administration is one of the few undergraduate programs designed specifically around hospitality, with coursework in hotel operations, real estate, food and beverage, finance, revenue management, and service leadership. Columbia can place you near major hotels, restaurants, and hospitality investors, but it does not offer a comparable undergraduate hotel-management school or the same built-in hospitality recruiting structure.

At Cornell, you would enter a cohort whose classmates, faculty, alumni, career office, student organizations, and employer relationships are concentrated in hospitality. That matters in an industry where internships, operational experience, and personal networks often lead directly to management-development programs and early career opportunities. The Nolan School also connects hospitality to areas that increasingly shape hotel careers, including real estate, analytics, entrepreneurship, and luxury or lifestyle brands.

Columbia could make sense for a student who wants to study economics, urban studies, engineering, or another field while independently pursuing hospitality internships in New York. Its location can be especially useful for part-time work and exposure to the city’s hospitality scene, but you would need to create the hotel-specific curriculum and network more actively. Cornell’s Ithaca location is less convenient for semester-long city internships, though the school’s established recruiting pipelines help offset that difference.

For a career specifically in hotel management, Cornell is the more direct and practical choice. Its hotel school gives you targeted preparation, a recognized hospitality credential, and an alumni network that is unusually relevant to hotel operations, development, and corporate leadership.
