Which undergraduate program offers better preparation for pharmacy school, UVA or Rutgers?

For a student who is already fairly certain about pharmacy, Rutgers is likely the more targeted choice. Its Ernest Mario School of Pharmacy gives undergraduates unusually close access to pharmacy-focused coursework, faculty, student organizations, and a campus community built around the PharmD pathway.

UVA is an excellent fit for a student who wants a broad liberal-arts university experience, strong science departments, and the flexibility to reconsider pharmacy in favor of medicine, research, public health, or another health field. UVA’s pre-health advising can support pharmacy-school applicants, and a UVA science degree can provide solid preparation for prerequisite courses. However, UVA does not have its own pharmacy school, so pharmacy-specific mentorship and day-to-day exposure may require more initiative.

At either school, pharmacy-school readiness will depend most on completing prerequisites with strong grades, building sustained patient-care or pharmacy experience, developing relationships for recommendations, and understanding the profession through shadowing or work as a pharmacy technician.
