Your main Common App personal statement does not need to become two different stories, but the supplemental responses should not be interchangeable.

For Stanford, resist turning every answer into an accomplishment list. Its short questions are opportunities to reveal texture: an oddly specific curiosity, family ritual, small responsibility, niche creative habit, or idea that changed how you see the world. A strong Stanford set can be playful in one response and serious in another, as long as it consistently shows reflection and intellectual energy. Use concrete moments rather than broad claims such as “I love innovation” or “I want to change the world.”

For Northwestern, make the academic and campus connection more explicit. Identify a focused interest, then explain how particular Northwestern resources would help you pursue it, such as a school or program, interdisciplinary pathway, research area, student organization, performance opportunity, or Evanston/Chicago-based experience. The details should support a real plan, not read like a catalog. For example, a student interested in health communication could connect an interest in public-facing science writing to relevant coursework, journalism opportunities, and Chicago-area health institutions.

Tone matters, too. Stanford essays can accommodate more voice, surprise, and open-ended exploration. Northwestern essays should still sound personal, but they benefit from clearer direction: what you want to study or investigate, how you would participate, and why Northwestern’s particular structure fits that path. In both applications, keep the central character consistent; change the evidence you use to show why each campus is a meaningful next setting.
