Is Penn or Stanford the better choice for an undergraduate nursing degree?

The biggest practical difference is that Penn has a direct, four-year undergraduate nursing program leading to a BSN, while Stanford does not offer an undergraduate nursing major or a pre-licensure BSN pathway. At Penn Nursing, students complete nursing coursework and clinical education as undergraduates and can pursue RN licensure after meeting degree and exam requirements. Stanford can support interests in health, biology, or public policy, but it would require a separate nursing-degree route after graduation.

Penn’s School of Nursing is a major advantage for someone already confident about becoming a registered nurse. Its curriculum combines science and liberal-arts courses with nursing-specific classes, simulation training, and clinical placements in the Philadelphia area. You would also be part of an undergraduate cohort whose academic and career planning is built around nursing, rather than assembling a pre-health course plan on your own.

Stanford could make sense only if you are less certain about nursing and want maximum flexibility to explore another undergraduate field first. A Stanford student interested in nursing would typically need to earn a BSN through an accelerated or second-degree program elsewhere after completing a bachelor’s degree, adding time and tuition before becoming eligible for RN licensure. Stanford’s medical and research environment is excellent, but that is not the same as preparing undergraduates for bedside nursing practice.
