Is Princeton more prestigious than Boston University?

The biggest practical difference is that Princeton carries a more immediately recognizable elite-national academic signal, while Boston University offers a highly respected research-university name with broader scale, a major-city setting, and strong professional connections. For employers, graduate programs, and other universities, Princeton is generally perceived as the more prestigious institution overall.

That does not mean a BU degree is viewed negatively or as limiting. BU is widely respected, particularly in fields tied to its professional schools and Boston location, such as communications, business, engineering, health-related fields, and the arts. Strong grades, substantive internships or research, recommendations, and the level of coursework will matter far more than the Princeton-versus-BU label for many jobs and graduate-school decisions.

At highly selective graduate programs or prestige-conscious employers, Princeton’s name may provide a modest initial advantage because readers instantly recognize its selectivity and academic environment. But neither school guarantees an outcome: a high-achieving BU student with focused experience can be a stronger candidate than a Princeton student with a thinner record.

That difference is real, but it should not override practical considerations such as cost, intended field, campus environment, and where you are most likely to thrive and build a strong record.
