Georgetown has the more urban campus setting: its campus sits in Washington, D.C.’s historic Georgetown neighborhood, with city streets, shops, restaurants, and row houses immediately outside the gates. Vanderbilt feels more like a distinct residential campus, even though it is close to central Nashville. Both offer substantial access to their cities, but Georgetown is more physically woven into its surrounding neighborhood.

Georgetown’s campus is compact, hilly, and clearly defined, yet it does not feel isolated from D.C. Students can walk into Georgetown’s commercial corridors quickly, and the broader city is accessible by bus, rideshare, biking, or walking toward Foggy Bottom and downtown. One practical caveat is that there is no Metrorail station directly at Georgetown, so public-transit access is less seamless than at some other D.C. campuses.

Vanderbilt’s campus is much larger, greener, and more enclosed in feel. Its landscaped grounds and prominent campus boundaries create a strong “college campus” atmosphere in the middle of Nashville. The area around it, especially West End and nearby Midtown, has restaurants, music venues, apartments, and student-oriented activity, while neighborhoods such as Hillsboro Village and 12 South are nearby.

For a student who wants to step off campus and immediately feel embedded in an urban neighborhood, Georgetown delivers that more consistently. For someone who wants a traditional, leafy campus that still places Nashville’s dining, music, and nightlife within easy reach, Vanderbilt has the more self-contained environment.
