Which is stronger for undergraduate STEM: Yale or Swarthmore?

Students who are proactive about contacting labs can pursue research across Yale’s science departments and professional schools, and the scale of the university creates a wider menu of courses, seminars, and research groups.

Swarthmore suits a student who learns best in small, discussion-oriented classes and wants professors to know their work closely from the beginning. Its biology and other science faculty are focused on teaching undergraduates, and students can still undertake substantial research, including summer work and thesis-level projects. The Tri-College Consortium with Bryn Mawr and Haverford expands course access, and eligible Swarthmore students may cross-register at the University of Pennsylvania for offerings not available on campus.

For preparation for graduate school, medical school, or research careers, either can be excellent. At Yale, success may require more initiative in a larger environment; at Swarthmore, the academic experience is often more personally structured and intensive.
