Johns Hopkins vs. Northwestern for journalism: Which undergraduate program is stronger?

The biggest practical difference is that Northwestern has a dedicated undergraduate journalism school, Medill, while Johns Hopkins does not offer a comparable undergraduate journalism major. At Medill, reporting, interviewing, editing, multimedia production, media law and ethics are built into a professional curriculum, with structured opportunities to report in Chicago and other locations. For a student whose central goal is investigative reporting as a career, that depth of training and industry access matters more than the overall university name.

Northwestern students can pursue reporting through Medill’s journalism major, its experiential programs, student publications, and Chicago’s unusually large media ecosystem. Medill also has faculty with newsroom backgrounds and offers specialized work in areas such as politics, social justice, health, science, and data-driven reporting. Its alumni network is especially relevant for internships, early newsroom jobs, and mentorship in journalism.

Johns Hopkins can still be a compelling place to develop as a writer and reporter, particularly for someone drawn to science, health, international affairs, or Baltimore-focused reporting. The Writing Seminars, student newspaper The Johns Hopkins News-Letter, and access to serious research can provide excellent raw material for a student-built journalism path. But you would need to create much more of that path yourself through writing courses, campus reporting, internships, and possibly a related major.

For undergraduate journalism training aimed at reporting and investigative work, Northwestern is the clearer choice. Hopkins makes more sense only if you want journalism to be secondary to a different academic focus, especially one where Hopkins’s research strengths would shape the kinds of stories you hope to cover.
