Which offers better access to undergraduate research, Clemson or NC State?
I’m a high school senior comparing Clemson and NC State for my undergraduate degree and want research to be a meaningful part of college. I’m especially interested in how easy it is for undergraduates to join faculty labs and get hands-on experience, rather than only doing research in their senior year.

Clemson offers the more accessible undergraduate research entry point for most students, especially if you want to begin before senior year. Its Creative Inquiry program is built around faculty-led, team-based research projects that undergraduates can join for academic credit, often without needing to secure a traditional one-on-one lab position first. That structure makes hands-on work more visible and easier to enter early in college.
NC State has a larger and very strong research environment, particularly in engineering, computer science, agriculture, textiles, design, and life sciences. Its Office of Undergraduate Research, faculty labs, and research programs provide substantial opportunities, but finding a position can be more decentralized: students often identify relevant professors, contact labs, and compete for openings. Students who arrive with a defined specialty and are proactive about outreach may find NC State’s breadth especially valuable, but Clemson’s organized Creative Inquiry model makes research participation easier to access from the start.
