Should I choose UGA or Tulane for undergraduate research?

Choose Tulane if your main criterion is early, direct access to faculty-led undergraduate research. Its much smaller undergraduate population can make it easier to build relationships with professors, and Tulane has structured undergraduate research support through programs such as the Newcomb-Tulane College research initiatives and summer research opportunities. Students can often connect research to New Orleans-based work in public health, environmental studies, social policy, medicine, and community partnerships.

UGA offers greater overall research breadth and a larger research ecosystem. Its Center for Undergraduate Research Opportunities (CURO) is a particularly strong resource: it helps students identify mentors, pursue research courses, present work, and participate in the CURO Symposium. UGA may have the deeper set of options for fields such as agriculture, ecology, genetics, forestry, psychology, business, and the sciences, simply because of its scale and extensive faculty research activity.

The tradeoff is access versus volume. At Tulane, a student who reaches out thoughtfully and engages in class may find it more straightforward to become known by a professor and join a smaller research group early. At UGA, there may be more labs and projects to choose from, but students need to be more deliberate about using CURO, attending office hours, and contacting faculty rather than assuming opportunities will come to them.

For research tied to public health, environmental resilience, urban issues, or community-based work, Tulane’s location and institutional focus are especially distinctive. For a highly specialized STEM or agriculture-related interest, UGA’s breadth could outweigh the smaller-school access advantage.
