UIUC vs. UCLA: Which Offers a Better College Town Experience?

For the campus-centered, traditional college-town experience you describe, UIUC is the closer match. Urbana-Champaign is built around the university: Campustown, Green Street, student apartments, coffee shops, restaurants, and many social spaces sit immediately next to campus, so it is easy to run into classmates and make spontaneous plans without much transportation planning.

UIUC tends to suit students who want their daily life to revolve around the university. The campus is large and active, with distinct residential areas, major student events, Big Ten athletics, and a local economy that caters heavily to students. Champaign-Urbana does have its own community and cultural offerings, but the university is the clear center of the area. One tradeoff is that the setting is smaller and quieter than Los Angeles, especially away from campus.

UCLA fits students who want an exceptionally lively campus while also having a major city at their doorstep. Westwood is walkable from UCLA and has restaurants, shops, and student-oriented places to gather, while campus housing and student organizations create a strong internal social scene. However, UCLA is not a classic self-contained college town in the UIUC sense. Students often spread out into different parts of Los Angeles for internships, food, entertainment, beaches, and nightlife, and getting around can require more time, money, and planning.

UCLA can still feel very connected, particularly for students living on or near the Hill during their first years. But for effortless, everyday student interaction centered in one walkable university district, UIUC offers the more recognizable college-town environment.
