Is Georgetown or Boston College better for studying theology?

For an undergraduate focused specifically on Catholic theology, Boston College has the edge. Its Theology Department is one of the university’s signature academic areas, and BC’s Jesuit, Catholic identity is especially visible in its Core Curriculum. The department offers a dedicated theology major with substantial work in scripture, historical theology, ethics, spirituality, and systematic theology.

Boston College also gives undergraduates proximity to the School of Theology and Ministry, a major graduate center for Catholic theological study and ministerial formation. Although undergraduates are not enrolled in that school, its faculty, lectures, liturgies, and intellectual life can make BC feel particularly rich for a student interested in Catholic tradition, Church life, or eventual graduate study in theology.

Georgetown is also an excellent place to study theology, particularly for students drawn to theology’s engagement with public life, global issues, religious pluralism, and social justice. Its Department of Theology and Religious Studies offers a theology major within a deeply Jesuit university, but its undergraduate curriculum more explicitly places Catholic theology in conversation with other religious traditions and contemporary questions.

The distinction is less about academic quality than emphasis: BC offers a more concentrated Catholic theological environment, while Georgetown offers a broader, more outward-facing approach to theology and religious studies.
