How does Duke’s campus size compare with the University of Michigan’s?

Duke often feels more self-contained because much of its land is forest, gardens, and the Duke Forest rather than academic space. Michigan feels more urban and spread across distinct academic areas within and alongside Ann Arbor.

A student who likes a scenic, residential setting may find Duke easier to navigate day to day than the acreage suggests. Most undergraduate activity is concentrated on West Campus and East Campus. Within West Campus, many classes, dining options, and dorms are fairly close together, though the campus’s hills and wooded paths can make walks feel longer.

Michigan suits students comfortable with a larger public-university environment embedded in a city. Its Central Campus contains many core undergraduate buildings, while North Campus, home to engineering, art and design, music, and other programs, is far enough away that students routinely use the university bus system rather than walk between the two. Getting around also means navigating busy streets, city blocks, and a much larger student population.
