Duke vs. Brown: Which College Has a More Collaborative Academic Culture?

Brown is more likely to feel consistently collaborative across disciplines. Its Open Curriculum gives students unusual control over their course paths, so classmates are less often moving through the same required sequence or competing for the same narrowly defined outcomes.

At Duke, collaboration is very real, especially in project-based courses, research labs, residential communities, and many humanities and social science seminars. Students commonly form study groups and share notes, but the academic experience is more structured.

The difference is most noticeable in pre-health, engineering, economics, and introductory STEM settings. Duke students are supportive, but its highly achievement-oriented campus culture and concentration of pre-professional students can make those spaces feel more intense.
