How does Emory’s campus location compare with American University’s for college life?

The biggest practical difference is transportation: American University gives you much easier car-free access to a major city through the DC Metro, while Emory offers a greener, more self-contained campus experience with Atlanta reached more often by shuttle, bus, rideshare, or car. American’s Northwest DC campus is in a residential area near Tenleytown, and the Tenleytown-AU Metro station on the Red Line connects students to downtown DC, internships, museums, neighborhoods, and airports without needing a car. Emory sits in the leafy Druid Hills area near Decatur, with Emory Village and nearby neighborhoods providing some local options but less immediate rail access.

American does not feel like a downtown campus: its grounds are distinct from the city and its immediate neighborhood is relatively quiet. Still, students can realistically build DC into their weekly routine, whether that means exploring different neighborhoods, attending events, or commuting to federal, nonprofit, media, and policy-related opportunities. The Metro makes spontaneous plans more feasible, although travel across DC can still take time.

Emory’s setting feels more traditionally collegiate. The campus is attractive, walkable, and closely tied to student life, with strong access to Emory-affiliated academic and health institutions nearby. Atlanta is a large, lively city with substantial cultural, business, public-health, and entertainment opportunities, but Emory is not directly on MARTA rail. University shuttles and local transit help, yet students tend to plan city outings more deliberately than students at American.
