For a student who wants city access while still feeling embedded in an active, walkable college environment, ASU’s Tempe campus tends to provide the stronger day-to-day urban experience. The campus connects directly to Mill Avenue’s restaurants, coffee shops, music venues, and nightlife, and the Valley Metro light rail makes trips to downtown Phoenix and other parts of the metro area relatively straightforward. Tempe also has a notably lively campus culture, so the area around school often feels active beyond class hours.

Cal State LA places students much closer to central Los Angeles, with downtown only a short distance away and the region’s enormous range of food, arts, sports, and cultural events within reach. It makes sense for someone whose priority is using LA as a base, especially for internships or exploring different neighborhoods. However, the campus itself sits in University Hills near major roadways and has a more commuter-oriented rhythm. Many students leave after classes, so it can feel less like a self-contained college district.
