At ASU, the strongest outdoor months are roughly fall through spring. Students can hike nearby desert preserves and make weekend trips to the Superstition Mountains, Sedona, Flagstaff, and northern Arizona; camping and climbing are major draws. The limitation is summer heat, which can make daytime outdoor activity difficult for a substantial part of the year, and most larger destinations require a car or organized trip.

UNH offers a more traditional outdoors-oriented New England experience. The White Mountains and multiple ski areas are realistic weekend destinations, and the Seacoast is close enough for beach, kayaking, and sailing opportunities. Hiking, backpacking, cross-country skiing, downhill skiing, and winter camping can be part of the student calendar rather than occasional special trips. UNH’s outdoor programs and recreation community also make it easier to find peers for these activities, though winter weather requires real comfort with cold, snow, and shorter days.

For the outdoor mix you described, the University of New Hampshire is the stronger choice, especially because skiing is a priority. Arizona State is compelling if you would rather trade winter sports for frequent warm-weather hiking, desert landscapes, and an active city-based campus life.
