Is Cornell Engineering harder to get into than the University of Maryland’s engineering program?

The biggest practical difference is that Cornell Engineering is a highly selective private college within Cornell, while Maryland engineering is a large public program whose admissions process is also shaped by residency and space in the limited-enrollment major. Cornell Engineering is harder to enter because its applicant pool is exceptionally strong across academics, course rigor, activities, and recommendations. Maryland’s Clark School of Engineering is selective in its own right, but it admits a broader range of students and offers a different public-university access model.

At Cornell, applicants apply directly to the College of Engineering, so they are evaluated against other students seeking demanding STEM programs. Strong grades in the most rigorous available math and science courses are important, but so is evidence that a student has pursued engineering or technical interests with depth, such as research, design work, programming, robotics, community problem-solving, or substantial independent projects.

At Maryland, engineering applicants should also present strong preparation in calculus-track math, laboratory science, and relevant technical work. In-state applicants may have a meaningful admissions advantage at a flagship public university, while out-of-state admission can be more constrained. Maryland also has an internal limited-enrollment structure for engineering, so students should pay close attention to whether they are admitted directly to the major and to any pathway requirements that apply.

In a head-to-head comparison, Cornell Engineering is the more difficult admission target for the typical applicant. Maryland engineering is still far from a safety for students without excellent academic preparation, particularly for out-of-state applicants, but it is a more attainable reach or target depending on the student’s record.
