Is UMD or Duke stronger for an undergraduate public policy major?

UMD’s School of Public Policy is also highly credible and benefits from College Park’s location near federal agencies, nonprofits, think tanks, and Annapolis.

UMD offers more scale and arguably more convenient day-to-day access to policy-related internships during the academic year. Its proximity to D.C. is a real practical advantage for federal policy, advocacy, cybersecurity, transportation, environmental policy, and state and local government work. Students who are proactive can build an unusually strong résumé through internships while enrolled, though navigating opportunities and large-course environments may require more independence.

For the stronger overall undergraduate academic environment in public policy, Duke has the edge because Sanford is more concentrated around undergraduate policy education and offers a more intimate, resource-rich academic setting. UMD can be the more compelling choice when its cost is substantially lower or when you want to make the D.C. and Maryland policy network central to your college experience from the beginning.
