Is UMass Amherst or the University of Washington better for informatics?

For informatics specifically, the University of Washington has the more established and nationally visible program, particularly for human-computer interaction, data science, UX, and information-focused technology careers.

UW’s coursework is built around the interdisciplinary side of computing: designing technology for people and organizations, working with data, considering ethics and policy, and developing technical skills. That structure is especially compelling for a student who sees themselves in product design, UX research, analytics, information security, or technology consulting rather than only traditional software engineering.

UMass Amherst is still a strong option, especially through its College of Information and Computer Sciences and its computing-oriented academic environment. It can be attractive for students who want informatics alongside a more conventional computer science foundation, smaller-scale college-town life, or Massachusetts-based connections. Its strengths in computer science can also support informatics interests well, depending on the courses and projects a student chooses.

One practical issue is admission to UW Informatics: the major has limited capacity, and students should understand exactly whether they have direct admission to Informatics or would need to apply after enrolling. That distinction matters because attending UW does not automatically guarantee entry into the major. Assuming admission to the intended program at both schools, UW offers the clearer advantage for a student whose primary goal is an informatics education and related career network.
