Should I choose UMass Amherst or Pitt for public health?

Pitt may make it easier to pursue semester-long hospital, clinical-research, community-health, or health-policy experiences without leaving the city. At UMass, opportunities can still be substantial, but they may require more deliberate planning, transportation, or summer work beyond Amherst.

Compare the actual undergraduate curriculum, not just the program title. Look for required and elective work in epidemiology, biostatistics, environmental health, health policy, health equity, and research methods, then see which school lets you combine public health with interests such as biology, psychology, data science, nutrition, or a language. For health-related work after college, practical experience and quantitative preparation will matter at least as much as the name of the major.

Also prioritize affordability, especially if one option would leave you with meaningfully more debt. Visit or attend admitted-student events and ask each department how undergraduates obtain internships, whether research positions are accessible before junior year, what advising is available for graduate public health or health-professions paths, and where recent graduates work or study.

Pitt is the more compelling choice if you want your undergraduate years embedded in a large medical and public-health ecosystem and expect to seek hands-on urban health experience early. UMass Amherst is an excellent pick if its cost, campus culture, or academic flexibility fits you better and you are prepared to actively build internships and research experience.
