Is Carnegie Mellon worth the higher cost than UC Berkeley for computer science?

For most students, Carnegie Mellon is not worth a significantly higher family cost than UC Berkeley for computer science. Berkeley’s EECS and computer science programs are among the most respected in the field, and its recruiting access, alumni network, research opportunities, and location near the Bay Area create outstanding paths into software, AI, systems, startups, and graduate school. Employers will not view a Berkeley CS degree as a materially weaker credential.

Carnegie Mellon can justify the premium for a student who specifically wants its highly concentrated, tech-centered environment and can afford the difference without substantial borrowing or serious financial strain. Its School of Computer Science offers a particularly structured undergraduate experience, strong access to specialized areas such as robotics, machine learning, and human-computer interaction, and a campus culture where a large share of students are deeply immersed in computing.

Berkeley may fit a student who is comfortable being proactive in a larger public university. Introductory courses and popular CS pathways can feel more crowded and less personally managed, but motivated students can still find faculty research, student organizations, project teams, internships, and advanced coursework at an exceptional level. Berkeley also makes it relatively easy to combine CS with interests in business, public policy, mathematics, or other disciplines.

The key question is whether CMU’s advantages are worth the actual price difference in your situation. A large gap funded by loans, depleted family savings, or financial pressure is difficult to justify when Berkeley provides comparable career outcomes in computer science. Paying more for CMU makes more sense when the added cost is manageable and you know you would thrive in its more specialized, intense academic culture.
