Rice vs. Columbia: Which School Offers Better Access to New York City Internships?

Columbia’s biggest practical advantage is that New York City internships can be part of your regular academic-year routine, while from Rice they will usually require a summer move or a deliberate leave/remote arrangement. Columbia students can commute from Morningside Heights to employers across Manhattan and other boroughs, attend evening networking events, and take part-time internships during fall or spring. That proximity matters most in industries with dense NYC hiring, including finance, media, publishing, advertising, arts, nonprofits, policy, real estate, fashion, and many startup roles.

Columbia also benefits from an employer and alumni ecosystem that is physically concentrated in the city. A student can realistically meet an alum for coffee, attend an industry event after class, or accept a semester-long role that asks for two or three in-person days per week. Those repeated opportunities can make it easier to build experience before junior-year recruiting.

Rice does not prevent you from getting NYC internships. Its career resources, alumni network, and strong academic reputation can help students compete for New York summer positions, and Houston itself offers substantial opportunities in energy, health care, engineering, research, entrepreneurship, and business. For the specific goal of maximizing access to NYC internships throughout college, Columbia is the clear choice. Rice can still lead to excellent New York outcomes, particularly through summer internships, but Columbia makes New York-based professional exploration far more convenient and continuous.
