Carnegie Mellon has the clearer edge for an undergraduate whose main goal is to enter computer science research early and work closely with faculty in a research-intensive CS environment. The practical distinction is that Georgia Tech may offer more large-scale, organized pathways to participate, while Carnegie Mellon more consistently immerses an undergraduate in a dense CS research culture. For a student already focused on computer science research rather than engineering research more broadly, CMU is likely to provide the more direct environment for developing a faculty-mentored research profile.
