Is MIT or Georgia Tech More Difficult to Get Into for Engineering?

MIT is more difficult to get into for engineering applicants. Its applicant pool is exceptionally concentrated with students who have top-level preparation in math and science, substantial technical achievement, and strong evidence of intellectual curiosity beyond grades. MIT also has a very limited number of places relative to the global demand for its programs.

At MIT, applicants are admitted to the Institute rather than directly to a specific engineering major. That means an intended mechanical engineering, computer science, or electrical engineering student faces essentially the same extraordinarily selective overall admissions process, with course rigor, academic distinction, recommendations, activities, and personal qualities all carrying weight.

Georgia Tech is also highly selective, particularly for applicants from outside Georgia and for popular engineering-related interests such as computer science. However, Georgia Tech enrolls a larger undergraduate population and gives Georgia residents an important admissions advantage, so its overall admission process is less restrictive than MIT's. A strong applicant should view MIT as an extreme reach and Georgia Tech as a very competitive option whose difficulty depends meaningfully on residency and academic preparation.
