Is Georgetown or the University of Florida better for a career in public service?

For a career centered on federal policy, national nonprofits, or international public service, Georgetown offers the more powerful launchpad. Its Washington, D.C., location makes internships during the academic year far more accessible, not just during summers. Georgetown also has well-established pathways through government and political science programs, and a dense alumni network across agencies, congressional offices, advocacy groups, and think tanks.

The University of Florida can still provide excellent preparation, particularly for Florida-focused government, state policy, public administration, and public-interest work. UF’s political science and public policy resources create meaningful opportunities for civic engagement and leadership. Its large alumni base in Florida government and nonprofits is a real asset, and UF may be the more financially sensible choice if it comes at a substantially lower cost.

The financial comparison matters: a much lower-cost UF degree can be a strong foundation, especially because public-service careers often involve graduate school or lower early-career salaries.
