Stanford vs. Northwestern: Which campus location is better for access to a major city?

The central tradeoff is that Northwestern gives you frequent, car-free access to downtown Chicago, while Stanford sits in the heart of Silicon Valley but requires a longer trip to San Francisco. Northwestern’s Evanston campus is directly connected to Chicago by the CTA Purple Line and Metra, making city neighborhoods, museums, concerts, restaurants, and many employers realistic options for an afternoon or weekend. Stanford is in Palo Alto, a lively but much smaller city, with San Francisco farther away by Caltrain or car.

For internships, Stanford has an unusual advantage even without immediate big-city access: major technology, venture capital, biotech, and startup employers are spread throughout the Peninsula and South Bay. However, reaching many of those offices is easier with a car, especially outside Caltrain corridors. Trips to San Francisco can be manageable, but they take more planning and are less convenient for spontaneous evenings than Chicago is from Northwestern.

For the specific priority of easy access to a major city, Northwestern is the stronger choice. Stanford is excellent for Silicon Valley opportunities and California’s outdoor lifestyle, but Northwestern provides the more seamless urban experience.
