Should I choose UVA or Johns Hopkins for research intensity?

For a student who wants research to be a central part of campus life, especially in biomedical science, public health, neuroscience, engineering, or medicine-adjacent fields, Johns Hopkins offers the more research-intensive environment. Research is deeply embedded in Hopkins’ identity, and undergraduates are surrounded by major affiliated research institutions such as the School of Medicine, Bloomberg School of Public Health, and the Applied Physics Laboratory. It is common for Hopkins students to seek lab positions early, although joining a particular lab still depends on persistence, preparation, and faculty capacity.

Hopkins can be especially compelling for a student who enjoys a fast-paced, academically focused culture and wants frequent exposure to active researchers, clinical questions, and specialized labs. Access is not automatic: students often need to email professors, attend office hours, and demonstrate genuine interest before securing a sustained role.

UVA is an excellent fit for a student who wants substantial research opportunities within a broader traditional university experience. It has strong undergraduate research in fields including biology, chemistry, engineering, data science, psychology, environmental science, humanities, and social science, with particular opportunities through its medical center and research centers. Because UVA is a larger public university, students may need to be more proactive in navigating departments and building relationships, but its scale also creates a wide range of projects and disciplines.

The key difference is emphasis. At Hopkins, research is likely to feel like the institution’s everyday language, particularly in STEM and health-related areas. At UVA, research can be a major part of the undergraduate experience without necessarily defining the entire campus culture. For research intensity alone, Hopkins has the clearer edge; for research combined with a wider balance of academics, campus traditions, and student life, UVA may feel more complete.
