How does student diversity compare between the University of Virginia and Howard University?

For a student seeking a campus where Black identity, culture, and leadership are central to everyday life, Howard University offers the more distinct experience; UVA is diverse in a broader public-university sense but has a different campus culture. Howard is a historically Black university, so Black students, faculty, traditions, student organizations, and institutional history shape the default campus environment rather than serving primarily as affinity spaces.

At Howard, students encounter a large Black community with wide internal diversity, including different regional backgrounds, socioeconomic experiences, African and Caribbean diasporas, and academic interests. Its location in Washington, D.C., also connects campus life to Black cultural institutions, civic life, internships, and professional networks. The day-to-day atmosphere is often described as culturally affirming and community-oriented, while still including students of many racial and national backgrounds.
