Which offers better out-of-state value, UVA or Florida State?
I’m a high school senior comparing the University of Virginia and Florida State University as an out-of-state student. I’m mainly trying to understand which one generally provides better overall value when considering academic reputation, career opportunities, and likely total cost.

For most out-of-state students paying close to the published price, Florida State offers the better overall value because its total cost is typically far lower than UVA’s. UVA has the stronger national academic brand and especially deep recruiting in fields such as finance, consulting, law, public policy, and some graduate-school pathways. That advantage is real, but it does not automatically justify a substantially larger four-year bill.
Florida State can be particularly cost-effective for students planning to build a career in Florida or the Southeast. Its large alumni network, connections in Tallahassee, and access to internships tied to state government, business, education, and public service create practical career opportunities, while its lower cost leaves more room for graduate school, relocation, or lower-pressure career choices after college.
It may be worth the extra cost for a student who has a clear reason to use UVA’s recruiting network or academic offerings, such as pursuing highly selective business or policy-oriented opportunities. Compare each school’s official net price estimate and any merit awards, then focus on the four-year difference rather than the annual sticker price.
