How does admissions difficulty compare between USC and Syracuse?

USC is a much more selective reach for most applicants, while Syracuse is selective but tends to offer a more attainable admissions path for students with strong, well-matched academic records. USC receives an exceptionally large national and international applicant pool for a relatively limited class, and its review is highly competitive across most schools and majors. Syracuse also attracts many applicants, especially for programs such as Newhouse, Architecture, Visual and Performing Arts, and certain business or engineering options, but its overall admission bar is less restrictive than USC’s.

At USC, excellent grades, rigorous coursework, meaningful involvement, and strong writing are common among admitted students, so meeting academic expectations alone rarely distinguishes an applicant. Some USC divisions, including cinematic arts, business, engineering, and arts programs, can be especially difficult because of demand and, in some cases, portfolio or audition requirements. Syracuse evaluates applicants holistically as well, but a student who is academically solid and demonstrates a clear interest in a particular Syracuse program may face more favorable odds there than at USC.

For application planning, treat USC as a high reach unless your profile is unusually strong for its applicant pool. Syracuse may still be a reach for highly competitive programs, but for overall undergraduate admission it is meaningfully less difficult to enter.
