BU vs. Northeastern: Which Is Better for Access to Boston Internships?

Northeastern offers the more direct and structured path to Boston internships because its co-op program is built into the academic experience. Students can take full-time, typically multi-month work placements while remaining enrolled, rather than trying to fit most professional experience around a full course load.

The biggest difference is academic structure. At Northeastern, co-op advisors and employer relationships help students prepare for, apply to, and complete substantial placements, often giving them enough time at one organization to take on meaningful work. This can be especially useful in fields with many Boston employers, including business, technology, healthcare, engineering, media, and nonprofits.

BU students also have strong access to Boston internships, particularly during summers and through part-time roles during the semester. BU’s Charles River campus is well connected by the Green Line and close to Kenmore, Fenway, Back Bay, and downtown, while the university’s career center, school-based advising, employer events, and alumni network support internship searches. But BU’s more traditional semester schedule means students usually need to independently balance applications and work hours with classes, or concentrate internships in the summer.

For a student who wants repeated, full-time work experience integrated into the degree plan, Northeastern has the clearer infrastructure. BU can produce equally strong internship outcomes, but it rewards a student who is proactive about using Boston’s location and creating room in their schedule for opportunities.
