For graduate-school preparation, the quality and duration of your research involvement will matter more than the course title of your major. A well-chosen co-op could give you substantial professional experience that is harder to obtain during a standard summer internship. However, a student targeting a research Ph.D. would need to be deliberate about maintaining continuous lab involvement around co-op cycles, rather than relying on work experience alone.

For a student whose priority is the strongest undergraduate research foundation for psychology graduate study, Northwestern has the edge. Northeastern becomes the more fitting choice when co-op, applied mental-health or industry exposure, and the flexibility to explore psychology in professional settings are central to what you want from college.
