Is Vanderbilt generally more selective than Pomona College?

Pomona is often at least as selective as Vanderbilt when measured by admission rate, although that can shift from cycle to cycle as application volume and enrollment goals change. Its limited class size and distinctive liberal arts model make admission especially constrained. Vanderbilt’s applicant pool is also enormous, and admission is exceptionally difficult across its undergraduate divisions.

The applicant pools are not perfectly interchangeable. Pomona may place particular weight on evidence that a student will thrive in close faculty relationships, broad liberal arts exploration, and its consortium setting. Vanderbilt may see more applicants drawn to a larger university’s research opportunities, professional pathways, and campus scale. That means an applicant’s fit and application presentation can matter more than a small difference in selectivity measures.

Vanderbilt is not reliably or broadly more selective than Pomona. They occupy a similarly ultra-selective tier, with Pomona frequently matching or exceeding Vanderbilt’s selectivity because of its very small entering class.
