Its small liberal-arts setting is built around undergraduate teaching, with many discussion-based classes and a much lower likelihood that your first courses will feel anonymous. Faculty members are a central part of students’ academic lives, not just instructors in a large research ecosystem.

At Williams, the tutorial program is a particularly distinctive advantage: two students work closely with a professor, regularly writing and discussing papers. Even outside tutorials, small departments and an undergraduate-focused campus make it relatively common to know professors well through class, office hours, independent studies, and thesis work. Research opportunities are often directly faculty-led and can be accessible before junior or senior year.

Vanderbilt professors can also be excellent mentors, and its research scale creates broader opportunities in areas such as medicine, engineering, neuroscience, and policy. Students who seek office hours, join labs, and build relationships within a department can receive substantial individual attention.
