Yale vs. University of Michigan for undergraduate engineering: How should I compare them?

I’m a high school senior deciding between Yale and the University of Michigan for engineering. I’m interested in getting a strong technical education while also having opportunities for research and interdisciplinary study, but the two schools have very different sizes and campus environments. I’m trying to understand the main academic and student-experience differences that should guide my decision.

Choose Yale if you want engineering in a small, liberal-arts-centered setting where it is easy to combine technical work with the humanities, social sciences, arts, or policy. Yale’s School of Engineering  Applied Science is much smaller than Michigan’s engineering college, so faculty access, intimate classes, and an undergraduate-focused residential-college community are central parts of the experience. The College of Engineering has considerable depth in areas such as computer science, robotics, aerospace, automotive and mobility systems, materials, biomedical engineering, and environmental engineering. A student who already has a defined technical direction, or who wants room to explore many engineering subfields before settling, may find Michigan’s scale valuable.

Michigan’s campus experience is larger, more energetic, and more decentralized. You will need to take more initiative to create close faculty relationships and a small community, but you will also find a very broad range of peers, organizations, design teams, and professional opportunities. Interdisciplinary study is certainly possible through Michigan’s many schools and colleges, though engineering can more readily become the center of your academic and social life.

Also weigh the practical difference in cost, especially because Michigan’s value can vary substantially by residency and aid package. Visit or revisit with a specific question in mind: would you rather be one of relatively few engineers embedded in a broad undergraduate college, or one member of a large engineering ecosystem where technical opportunities are everywhere?
