Johns Hopkins vs UConn for undergraduate biomedical sciences: which is better for research preparation?

I’m a high school senior deciding between Johns Hopkins and the University of Connecticut for biomedical sciences. I’m interested in eventually pursuing medical school or biomedical research, so I want to compare how well each university prepares undergraduates for research through lab opportunities, faculty mentorship, and hands-on experience.

Its larger size means that initiative matters more: students may need to contact faculty early, pursue positions deliberately, and navigate travel or scheduling between Storrs and Farmington for some health-related work. That can still produce strong mentorship and meaningful hands-on experience, particularly for students interested in genomics, biomedical engineering, or health research.

For research preparation alone, Johns Hopkins is the stronger choice because the concentration of biomedical investigators, medical-school-adjacent opportunities, and research-focused peer culture gives an undergraduate more built-in access to sustained lab experience. UConn can prepare a proactive student very well, especially if it is significantly more affordable, but Hopkins offers the more direct and immersive launch point for both MD and biomedical PhD paths.
