Is Syracuse or Boston University better for computer science?

Boston University is the stronger choice for most students prioritizing computer science recruiting, access to internships during the school year, and a broad set of technical opportunities. BU’s Boston location places students near a dense concentration of software, biotech, finance, health-tech, and startup employers. Its computer science program also connects with the Faculty of Computing & Data Sciences, giving undergraduates added exposure to data science and interdisciplinary computing.

For academics, BU offers substantial CS course depth, research opportunities, and project-oriented resources such as the BU Spark! innovation and career center. Being in Boston can make it more practical to pursue part-time internships, attend employer events, and build a network before senior year. BU students also benefit from proximity to nearby universities, labs, and tech communities, even though BU is not structured around a mandatory co-op model.

Syracuse has a credible CS program and may be especially appealing to students who want a more contained campus environment and close connections between computing, engineering, and the School of Information Studies. Its smaller-city setting can feel more community-oriented, and programs such as the Blackstone LaunchPad support students interested in entrepreneurship. Syracuse can still lead to strong outcomes, but students may need to be more deliberate about pursuing summer internships outside central New York.

Cost and personal fit can reasonably outweigh the difference. But with comparable financial aid, BU provides a more advantageous day-to-day environment for building industry experience while earning the degree, particularly for a student who wants software engineering, data-focused work, or technology roles in business and healthcare.
