Is Boston College or Dartmouth more fun for students?

The biggest practical tradeoff is an all-in, campus-centered social life at Dartmouth versus a more city-connected experience at Boston College. Dartmouth’s rural Hanover setting means much of students’ free time happens with other students through residence halls, outdoor activities, campus events, Greek organizations, and traditions such as Winter Carnival and the Homecoming bonfire. Boston College has a close residential campus in Chestnut Hill, but students can also spend weekends in Boston, creating more variety while making the social scene somewhat less concentrated in one place.

Dartmouth can feel especially easy for meeting people because the undergraduate community is small, students are highly involved on campus, and there is less temptation to disperse into a surrounding city. The outdoor culture, from hiking to skiing to trips with the Dartmouth Outing Club, is a meaningful part of what many students consider fun.

At Boston College, the social calendar often revolves around football weekends, campus traditions, student organizations, service groups, and Boston outings. The student body has a strong school-spirit culture, and the Jesuit setting gives the campus a more values-oriented, preprofessional feel than Dartmouth’s more independent and outdoorsy atmosphere. BC does not have officially recognized Greek life, so its social scene is less centered on fraternities and sororities.

For a student who wants the most immersive, tradition-heavy, and consistently campus-based version of “fun,” Dartmouth has the edge. Boston College may be more enjoyable for someone who wants a friendly campus community without giving up access to concerts, restaurants, internships, and the broader social options of Boston.
