Is Fordham or UMN better for building a professional network in New York?

I’m a high school senior deciding between the University of Minnesota and Fordham University. I’m interested in starting my career in New York after college, so I want to understand which school would give me stronger access to alumni, internships, and professional connections in the city.

Fordham is the more practical choice for building a professional network in New York because you would be studying in the city and able to develop contacts throughout all four years.

The biggest advantage is repeat access, not just a school name on a résumé. Fordham students can pursue part-time internships during the academic year, attend employer events and alumni panels in person, and maintain relationships with supervisors after an internship ends. That makes it easier to turn one internship into a referral, a second role, or an entry-level interview.

UMN Twin Cities offers a strong alumni network and excellent professional opportunities, particularly in Minneapolis–St. Paul and across the Midwest. A UMN student can still reach New York through summer internships, alumni outreach, and targeted recruiting, but doing so requires more self-directed planning and often travel or a summer in the city.
