Is Duke or the University of Miami better for warm weather?

For reliably warm weather and a year-round outdoor lifestyle, the University of Miami is the clear choice. Coral Gables has a tropical climate: winters are warm, most of the academic year supports shorts-and-T-shirt weather, and the campus is close to beaches and South Florida outdoor activities. Duke, in Durham, North Carolina, has four distinct seasons and a noticeably cooler winter.

At Miami, the tradeoff for winter warmth is heat, humidity, and frequent summer rain. Spring is especially pleasant, while winter temperatures are far milder than those at Duke.

Duke’s weather is more variable but less tropical. August and September can still be hot and humid, and spring and much of fall are excellent for being outside on Duke’s wooded campus, walking the trails in Duke Forest, or attending events such as basketball games and campus activities. But students should expect cool stretches, regular rain, and occasional freezing temperatures in winter; snow and ice are uncommon but can occur.

Miami offers palms, lush subtropical landscaping, pool and beach culture, boating, and easy access to outdoor dining throughout the calendar. Duke offers a green, forested campus with seasonal changes, hiking and running opportunities, and a more traditional North Carolina spring and fall. For someone who wants to avoid real winter and spend most of the school year in consistently warm conditions, Miami fits that priority much more closely.
