Is UIUC or the University of Washington better for tech networking?

The biggest practical difference is location: the University of Washington puts you in Seattle, where students can build in-person relationships with a dense cluster of major tech employers during the academic year, while UIUC offers a larger national engineering and computer science network from Champaign-Urbana. UW students benefit from proximity to companies such as Microsoft, Amazon, and many Seattle-area startups, along with alumni events, guest speakers, and part-time or school-year opportunities. UIUC has exceptionally deep ties across the tech industry, especially through its large Grainger Engineering community, active student organizations, major career fairs, and alumni presence in Silicon Valley, Chicago, and other tech hubs.

For networking with employers specifically, UW has an edge for students who will consistently use Seattle: attending local meetups, pursuing internships during the school year, and connecting with alumni face-to-face. Its Seattle setting can make informal networking more accessible, though students still need to seek out those opportunities rather than assume proximity creates connections automatically.

UIUC can be just as powerful, and in some areas broader, for a student who wants access to a large peer network and recruiters from many regions. Its CS and engineering student body is sizable, so classmates themselves often become valuable connections at companies nationwide. UIUC’s career infrastructure also makes it easier to meet a wide range of employers without relying as heavily on one city’s ecosystem.

For tech networking alone, I would give UW a slight advantage if you want to begin building Seattle-based relationships early and are interested in the Pacific Northwest tech scene. UIUC is the stronger pick if you value a large, nationally distributed CS alumni network and a campus-centered recruiting environment that reaches well beyond one metro area.
