Is UIUC or the University of Maryland better for building a career in Washington, DC?

The biggest practical difference is proximity: Maryland’s College Park campus sits just outside Washington and has a direct Metro connection, while UIUC is a major recruiting hub but is far from the day-to-day DC internship ecosystem. At Maryland, it is much easier to intern during the academic year with federal agencies, congressional offices, nonprofits, consulting firms, associations, and government contractors without taking a semester away from campus.

UIUC can still lead very effectively to DC, particularly in engineering, computer science, data, business, and other technical fields. Its large national alumni base, strong employer reputation, and recruiting infrastructure can open doors at firms with DC offices, including technology and consulting employers. However, a student at UIUC will more often need to target summer internships, use alumni outreach deliberately, or pursue a Washington-based program rather than casually accessing opportunities during the school year.

For a career specifically centered in Washington, DC, the University of Maryland has the clearer built-in advantage. You would be able to build a local résumé, meet professionals repeatedly, and potentially continue part-time work with the same organization through multiple semesters. UIUC may be equally compelling if its particular academic program is substantially better aligned with your goals, but Maryland is the more direct pipeline into the DC job market.
