Which school offers better access to Chicago: UIUC or Northwestern?

Northwestern offers substantially better day-to-day access to Chicago. Its Evanston campus sits directly north of the city, with CTA Purple Line stations by campus and Metra service nearby, so students can reach downtown without planning a full weekend trip. That makes attending an evening speaker event, meeting an alum for coffee, or commuting to a part-time internship realistically routine.

The university also has a Chicago campus in Streeterville, which can create additional programming and professional connections, especially in fields tied to its graduate and professional schools. Evanston itself is walkable and has restaurants, lakefront access, and enough activity that students are not dependent on Chicago for every social plan.

UIUC students do have access to Chicago, but Urbana-Champaign is a separate college town with bus options as well. The trip is very workable for occasional weekends, major events, interviews, or networking days, but it is less practical for frequent evening activities or an internship requiring several in-person days each week. UIUC’s career ecosystem is robust on campus, and Chicago employers do recruit there, so distance does not prevent students from pursuing Chicago opportunities; it mainly changes the logistics.

The difference matters most if you expect Chicago to be part of your weekly life. Northwestern makes the city an accessible extension of campus, while at UIUC it is more of a planned destination.
