Is Emory or Tufts better for community service opportunities?

Both schools can provide substantial, meaningful service, but the day-to-day opportunities will feel different.

At Emory, students can connect service with the university’s strengths in medicine and public health through local work in Atlanta. The Center for Community Partnerships coordinates community-engaged programs, and student organizations offer routes into tutoring, food access, refugee support, health outreach, and other local needs. Emory is particularly appealing for someone who wants service to intersect with pre-health, public health, policy, or Atlanta-based nonprofit work.

Tufts has an unusually visible institutional commitment to active citizenship through the Jonathan M. Tisch College of Civic Life. Its Leonard Carmichael Society is a longstanding student-led service organization, and Tufts students can work with schools, nonprofits, and municipal organizations in Medford, Somerville, and greater Boston. The university also makes it relatively easy to connect service with academic programs, research, advocacy, and community-based learning.

For broad, ongoing community-service access across many issue areas, Tufts has a slight advantage because its civic-engagement infrastructure is so central to campus life. For a student drawn specifically to healthcare, public health, or service in a major Southern city, Emory may offer the more compelling set of opportunities.
