How should I compare UC Santa Barbara and ETH Zurich for an undergraduate engineering degree?

I’m a high school senior deciding between engineering programs at UC Santa Barbara and ETH Zurich. I’m interested in research and eventually pursuing graduate study, so I’m trying to understand which school would provide the stronger overall academic fit for an undergraduate engineering student.

For undergraduate research access, UCSB may offer a more approachable path to joining a faculty lab early, partly because its four-year U.S. structure leaves more room for electives, sustained projects, and close faculty contact. For a student planning graduate school, ETH is compelling when German fluency and a European master’s pathway are part of the plan, while UCSB is often more accommodating for building a research record during the bachelor’s years.
