At CMU, students can tap into Pittsburgh neighborhoods, internships, arts events, sports, and cross-registration-style social overlap with nearby universities. At RPI, much of the social life is centered on campus, the student union, residence halls, clubs, Greek life, and established campus traditions.

CMU’s student body includes strong arts, computer science, business, design, and humanities communities alongside engineering, so it can be easier to meet people with interests outside a technical major. There are many organizations and events, but students often need to be intentional about making time because the workload can be demanding and social circles can form around majors, project teams, and residences.
